The second hand is a booming market. Accessible and above all cheaper, is it really worth it when you want to acquire a trading station? From hardware to installed software, we will see together what is behind these offers.

By looking on several specialized sites, I could see that the second-hand market does not offer much advertising for trading stations. On the whole of Ile-de-France, at the time of writing this article, only two ads appear with evasive descriptions.

If you want to find a second-hand station, you will have to do this in several steps:

1. ind a computer or central unit capable of hosting the number of screens you want
2. Find the number of screens desired, if possible the same, with the possibility of attaching them to a support
3. Get compatible media for screens
4. Check the correct compatibility of all components
5. Build it yourself and hope it works

As you can see, the second-hand market for trading stations can be risky. We leave it a little bit to chance what we hate in the trade.

The hardware of your trading PC

Even with an excellent knowledge of hardware, it will be difficult for you to see if the components are indeed those described in the announcement, if they are obsolete or not, if they were badly used previously and if they are all perfectly compatible with each other.

You will need to pay attention to the state of each component and device.
See if the screens do not have a dead pixel and their graphic rendering (brightness, contrast, color balance, etc…), if they will not tire your eyes in any way whatsoever by poor calibration or by the quality of the supplied connection cables (HDMI, DVI, VGA, …) and also the power cables.
You will need to test the graphics cards, the network card, the RAM, the hard drive (s), the fan (s), the different buttons and ports on the box (microphone, headphones, USB and other ports) as well as basic computer actions (power on, standby, power off, reset).

If you want the opportunity, still be demanding on the quality of the computer. Do not take a trading station without checking each of its components.

Software for your trading station

The OS, usually Windows, must be an original with supporting certification to avoid any future problems.When you buy a used computer, the problem is that you don’t know what the old user is doing with it and above all, what leaves it (this also applies to hardware).

For me a computer is like a toothbrush: it is personal, it has its history and is not suitable for other people.

Not to mention the fact that the previous owner could very well have left the OS and other software without updating. This creates security issues. Even if he did, the question is how.

Your used computer may well contain virus-like and other malware. The former user may well have downloaded different things, legal or not. All of this leaves traces on the computer, even deleting the programs and associated files.

The consequences on your trading

Imagine that you still invested a lot of time to have a great second-hand computer at a very good price. After these important efforts to find the different elements and put everything together, you turn it on and it works: great! Now imagine that a default occurs in a heavy position, is that not taking too great a risk on preserving the capital of your portfolio?

This can very well happen on so-called “simple” software to configure in which case you may have the knowledge to correct it. But if this happens on a more technical software, or on a computer component: what to do?
